Università di Roma La Sapienza

The scientific and educational involvement of URoma in the field of earthquake engineering, with all the related issues such as assessment and strengthening of existing constructions, is one of the oldest in Europe, as demonstrated by the organisation of the 5th World Conference on EE in Rome in 1973 and of the CEB International Symposium on “Structural Concrete under Seismic Actions”, which took place in Rome in 1979 and is considered as a milestone in the road towards the harmonisation of the seismic design Codes world-wide.
Another key field in the activities of URoma is the development and application of probabilistic approaches to structural safety problems. More recently, a new field has broadened the research and educational panorama at URoma, that is, the assessment and strengthening of existing constructions through conventional and innovative techniques and materials, which is clearly demonstrated by the deep involvement of the team in writing the new Eurocode 8 Part 3 on Assessment and Strengthening.
The specific expertise of the team which would carry out the proposed RTN programme includes modelling of inelastic behaviour and response of reinforced concrete structures, assessment of existing structures, use of composite materials for strengthening and rehabilitation of deficient structures, and it is therefore particularly appropriate for the activities foreseen in the programme.
