University of Patras

The University of Patras – Department of Civil Engineering will participate in the project through the Structural Materials Laboratory (Director T. C. Triantafillou). The Laboratory is equipped with materials and small-medium size specimen testing machines, a strong biaxial testing frame with ±500 kN and ±250 kN servohydraulic actuators, hydraulic pumps and state-of-the-art controllers performing a wide spectrum of tests, a complete series of non-destructive testing equipment, mortars characterisation and concrete technology equipment and a modern 2.5x4.0 m fully automated controlled temperature/humidity room.
In the past 12 year or so, research and training activities in the Structural Materials Laboratory have focused in the development and detailed study of innovative strengthening techniques for concrete, masonry and timber structures, and in mechanical behaviour studies for advanced construction materials (composite materials, high-performance concrete, light-weight concrete, high-strength mortars). These research activities have been carried out within the framework of 25 projects funded mainly by the EC and the industry, as well as by the Greek government. The research team at the Structural Materials Laboratory has demonstrated pioneering research in the area of innovative strengthening techniques, a field in which it has received world-wide recognition from the international scientific community (including three best paper awards from ASCE Journals). Prof. Triantafillou is the convenor of the EBR group within fib TG9.3 “FRP-Reinforcement for Concrete Structures” and is a member of the RILEM technical committees TRC, FRP-Concrete Bond and ACI440, in the field of new materials with particular emphasis on repair/strengthening. He is member of the International Editorial Board of the ASCE Journal of Composites for Construction.
The Structural Materials Laboratory at the University of Patras has provided / is providing training: (a) to undergraduate and graduate students as part of their curriculum; (b) to young researchers from abroad, within the framework of TMR ConFibreCrete and an Erasmus Intensive Programme; (c) to Greek professional engineers, through seminars; (d) to engineers from all over the world through the organization of the first fib (international federation for structural concrete) course, which was held in Athens, on May 4-5 (topic: “strengthening with externally bonded FRP reinforcement: behaviour, design and applications”). Within the EN-CORE project, the described know-how and expertise will become fully available for the training of young researchers.
